In 1820, the Spaniards fled Lima, Peru, during a civil revolt. The governor escaped with gold, silver, and jewelry, as well as 113 gold religious statues, including a life-size Virgin Mary, 273 swords with embedded jewelry, and at least a thousand diamonds.
