Your household is full of tools that can be hacked to help you out for various situations. Did you know that the kitchen sponge is far from just a little piece of foam used for cleaning up the dishes? You can turn it into a safe glue applicator, and even take it to the gym to help you get some gains painlessly! We have some of the best sponge hacks for you!

Water Plants

Watering plants is a tricky business, and not being careful with how little, or how much, water you give them can lead to a disaster. To keep the plants from flooding and molding, keep a sponge at the bottom of the pot. It will soak up any excess liquid that the plant doesn’t need, and it will keep it hydrated for when you forget to water it.

Fresh Closet

According to Life Hacks’ Youtube channel, another important thing you can do with sponges is ensuring that your closet always smells great. You can spray some sweet scent on a sponge and place it inside your closet. The perfume will slowly release to the air and hopefully, your clothes will never smell of mothballs again.

Keep Your Sponge Clean

Some people forget that you have to clean your sponge every day just like the rest of your plates. Remember, this item touches all the dirtiness from your food. However, it’s very easy to do it. You just need to wash it, remove all the excess water and throw it in the microwave for less than a minute. This will kill all bacteria!

Easy Ice Pack

If you’re ever in a pinch and don’t have a store-bought ice pack, you can just use a sponge in a Ziploc bag. Just soak the sponge in a bowl of water for several minutes so that it will absorb some moisture. Afterward, place in a bag and freeze. It’ll be ready to use in no time, and you won’t have to worry about it anymore!

Make Art

Using a paintbrush when painting is so outdated! How about you get creative with what you have at home and use a kitchen sponge instead? The sponge is perfect for soaking up the paint just enough, and painting with it creates a beautiful blended effect. The two sides of the sponge can also be used for different techniques!

Perfume Up Your Closet

Closets can get stuffy and smelly, but there is a simple way to give them a pleasant smell. You can use a sponge or two onto which you have dripped a few drops of your favorite essential oil. Lavender or lemongrass work particularly good, and because of their strong smell, the scent in your closet will be long-lasting!

Curl Your Hair

No need to get yourself expensive hair curlers. Do it the DIY way and make your own with the help of the ever-so versatile sponge! You will need to have enough hairpins to secure the sponges in place, but other than that, all you need is a good dose of patience. Just sleep in the sponge curlers and wake up all curly the next morning!

Laundry Helper

Sponges can be used instead of dryer sheets! You will need some fabric softener, a plastic container, and as many sponges as you wish. Soak the sponges in the softener, and use whenever needed. Your laundry will smell fresh and clean without having to do drugstore runs to stock up on dryer sheets!

Weightlift Without Pain

It might be a bit odd to bring sponges to a gym, but this hack will save your hands! Actually, sponges have been used by weightlifters for years, helping them lift the metal bars from the ground without developing painful calluses on their hands. You might get a few strange looks if you attempt this, but they are worth it!

Packing Fragile Items

If you have ever moved house, you might have noticed that one of the biggest struggles was packing all your glassware and other fragile items. People often use special packing balls to make sure their things get to their new home in perfect condition, but there is a simpler way to do it. Use sponges to secure the space between the fragile items!

Wash Sponges Properly

Your sponges do a lot of dirty work, so they need to be cleaned properly. The best way to do this is to put them in your dishwasher. It will give them a great rinse, and disinfect them with hot water too. It’s better to wash them in an empty dishwasher, as pieces of food will not get stuck in them.

Get Rid Of Dirt

If washing your sponges in the dishwasher didn’t do the trick, try this DIY cleaning method. Take a container and fill it with vinegar. Then soak the sponge in it for five minutes, and rinse it with water to get rid of the smell as much as possible. The vinegar will kill the majority of the bacteria in the sponge!

Sponge Glue

Arts and crafts often require glue, but that can quickly turn into a very messy situation. Glue bottle applicators aren’t exactly the most convenient way to glue things together, and glue oftentimes comes spilling out in a too-large quantity. To fix this problem, create sponge glue! Simply soak a sponge in glue overnight, and then dab whatever you need to be glued on the sponge!

Clean Your Fan

Fans are especially difficult to clean, as it’s nearly impossible to access each part. However, if you make a few cuts in a sponge, you can use it to run through your fan rails smoothly and easily. You can use this hack on other tricky surfaces too. Just make sure you slice up the sponge as much as needed.

Shoveling Aid

Shoveling large quantities of snow from your driveway can lead to rashes on your hands, and they tend to be pretty uncomfortable and painful. A way to avoid them is to use a sponge for each of your hands and grab the handle with the soft sponge side. Your hands will be cushioned and well taken care of!

Jewelry Case

Sponges have the perfect texture for storing your jewelry. Find a small container that will fit a sponge, and just pin your earrings and other little trinkets to it. It will hold them perfectly in place, and you won’t have to worry about losing an earring ever again. You can make this jewelry container as big as you wish too. Just add more sponges into a larger box.

Pedicure Accessory

Pedicures require your toes to be spread apart enough so that the nail polish doesn’t rub off. Drugstores sell special pedicure toe-spreaders, but there is no need to buy one if you can fashion it out of the sponges you have at home. Simply cut the sponge into small pieces and put them in between each toe

Clean Up Pet Fur

Sponges can get rid of your pet's fur in no time! The fur will stick to the texture of the sponge, and it will make the cleaning process much easier for you. No more trying to desperately pick up each single hair strand by hand. Use your creativity and use the sponge to help you out!

Sponges are versatile and useful little household helpers. If you approach them with a DIY crafting mind, you will get so much more out of them. No need to set boundaries to your imagination. Use whatever you have at home to its full potential, and don’t be afraid to be experimental!
