Cindy Crawford’s Road To Success
The cast of Friends dated several people publicly during and after the end of the show. You probably remember that Jennifer Aniston was married to Brad Pitt, and he even cameoed on the sitcom during a Thanksgiving episode. Meanwhile, Courteney Cox married David Arquette and was pregnant in the final season. However, some people always wondered if anything happened between the six main stars in real life. All of them denied the rumors for many years and maintained their close friendship. But they just revealed a huge shocker on the HBO Max reunion special—it’s what many fans always assumed but could never confirm.
After becoming some of the biggest stars in Hollywood, all six cast members were dating beautiful people in the industry. You might not remember their most famous relationships, but it was always front-page news. However, there was always something that fans wanted to know about even more: if they were dating each other—the truth is pretty complicated.
After the show ended, they all went their separate ways but maintained a friendship that continues to this day. That’s why they were able to gather to make the HBO Max reunion special that aired in May 2021. During that reunion, the cast revealed something that people had speculated about for many years. Can it be that fan's suspicions were right all along?!
The sitcom centered on the lives of six friends living and dating in New York City. There were many relationship storylines during those ten years, and the chemistry was so great that many fans wondered if it could be real. The stars always denied these rumors, and they worried about it affecting the show’s popularity. But almost 20 years later, they have surprised audiences with the story of what happened!
Host James Corden was astonished by the revelations made by these two Friends stars. Fans had always wondered because their on-screen chemistry on the show was so tangible and fantastic for ten years. Fascinatingly, they never told anyone about their feelings, but the rest of the cast KNEW all along ...
Courteney Cox was arguably the most famous when she got cast. At the time, she was dating Michael Keaton. They met through a friend back in 1989 and hit it off right away after a wonderful first date. The actress has admitted that it was one of her most significant relationships. Sadly, they broke up in 1995.
LeBlanc played Joey, a loveable lady’s man on the show. However, the actor was completely different off-screen. He started dating Missy McKnight in 1997 after meeting through a mutual friend, Lou Diamond Phillips. He proposed in 1998, and they got married in 2003. Unfortunately, they separated in 2006.
Most people had no idea that Lisa Kudrow dated Conan O’Brien for a while back in the day. She actually revealed many years later when she was invited to his talk show. They met during an improv class and started seeing each other. The actress loved how smart and funny he was. However, they quickly discovered they were better as friends.
This was probably the most notorious relationship out of the six cast members. Jennifer and Brad Pitt were Hollywood’s power couple for many years. Pitt appeared on a Thanksgiving episode, where they reveal all about the “I Hate Rachel Green Club.” Unfortunately, they separated in 2005 after a public scandal, but it seems they patched things up and remain friendly.
Schwimmer played Ross, who was really bad at talking to women and always had a crush on Rachel. However, he was completely off-screen and dated several stars over the years. Between 1995 and 1996, the actor had a relationship with singer Natalie Imbruglia. However, they never really seen together.
Another important couple at the time was Courteney Cox and David Arquette. After separating from Keaton, the actress met Arquette on the set of Scream. They started dating and got married in 1999. Cox even had to hide her pregnancy on the last season of the show. Sadly, they separated in 2013 after 11 years together.
Perry and Graham were first seen at a party together, and it looked like they were flirting. Naturally, Friends and Gilmore Girls fans were excited about the prospect of them dating. At the time, tabloids were sure of their relationship. However, the truth is that they never took it further.
After his divorce from Missy McKnight, LeBlanc started seeing Andrea Anders after meeting on the set of Joey. They started a pretty solid relationship and went public in 2006. Unfortunately, they ended their romance in 2012, and many rumors stated that the actor was dating other women back then. But none were substantiated.
She might have played the silliest character on the show, but Kudrow has the most stable love life. The actress met her husband, Michel Stern, in 1980. At the time, he was actually dating Lisa’s roommate. Luckily, they got together in the early 1990s and tied the knot in 1995. They have been together since!
The couple met in 2007 when Zoe Buckman served him at The Cuckoo Club in London. They started dating soon afterward in a whirlwind romance. She even moved to the U.S. to be with him. The couple got married in 2010 after a short engagement. Sadly, they separated in 2017.
After ending her relationship with Arquette in 2013, Cox started dating Snow Patrol singer Johnny McDaid. Unfortunately, their romance had many troubles, one being that McDaid wanted to move back to Ireland. Meanwhile, the actress wanted to stay in California. Luckily, they worked them out, and they are still together!
Unfortunately, not much is known about Perry’s dating life after 2010. However, there were many rumors while Friends aired. In 2003, the press speculated that he was in a relationship with Heather Graham. Both of them seemed to ignore the rumors until they went away.
James Michael Tyler played Gunther, the barista at Central Perk that had a crush on Rachel. The show never revealed much else about the character, but the actor had a solid love life. He was married for most of the original run of Friends to Barbara Chadsey. They separated in 2003, and the divorce was finalized in 2014. Luckily, he has a new wife, Jennifer Carno, and you can spot her all over his Instagram.
You might remember seeing these two on The Break-Up, but many people couldn’t figure them out together. They dated publicly for about a year between 2005 and 2006. However, neither of them ever admitted to being in a relationship. However, Aniston did love him. “I call Vince my defibrillator. He literally brought me back to life," she told Vogue in 2018.
Maggie Wheeler played Janice, Chandler’s loud ex-girlfriend that always appeared at the worst possible time. Interestingly, the actress has been married in real life for more than three decades. She tied the knot to Daniel Wheeler in 1990, and they are going strong. Additionally, the couple shares two daughters.
This pairing is hard to believe. You might remember Caplan best from Mean Girls, and she met Perry in 2006. They started a relationship but were rarely photographed together. However, they were seemingly together until 2012. Some rumors stated that they separated because the actor didn’t want to get married.
Aniston and John Mayor had a famous romance between 2008 and 2009. It’s said that she inspired one of his songs. After being seen with Brad Pitt at last year’s Oscar, now there are rumors about a possible rekindling with the singer. Apparently, he was spotted walking a dog similar to Aniston’s pooch. But it’s time to learn about the reunion and the couples on Friends!
Monica and Chandler became a couple after getting together in London. But on the HBO Max special, the creator explained that that was not supposed to happen. Apparently, the original idea was for them to have a one-night stand and be awkward for a while before moving on. Instead, they continued because of the audience.
Remember the scene where Monica suddenly appears from under the sheets? The audience went crazy while they shot the episode. Therefore, writers had to rethink their relationship because viewers loved them so much. “We still at that point didn’t quite realize how far it would go,” Marta Kauffman said when talking about the beginning of their romance. We are so glad they kept it!
None of them want a reboot or even a movie. Cox said that the event would even be the last time they got together on a recreation of the series. “We’re not going to do this again in 15 more years,” the actress added. That makes sense because you’re not going to make another reunion in 15 years.
It seems that some of the cast toyed with the idea of bringing Friends back, but it won’t happen. Lisa Kudrow added that the creators had managed to wrap each character’s storyline really well. “They would have to unravel all those good things in order for there to be more stories, and I don’t want anyone’s happy ending unraveled,” she continued.
Fortunately, James Corden asked them where they think their characters would be all these years later. Courteney said that Monica and Chandler’s kids have probably graduated. But Monica would still be helping out at the school and being a competitive mother. What about the rest of the cast?
Phoebe and Mike got married by the end of the show. Furthermore, it seemed like they wanted kids after seeing Monica and Chandler’s babies. Kudrow believes that they would be living in Connecticut, and their children would be a little different from everyone else. Apparently, Phoebe would also be an advocate for music and arts programs locally.
Meanwhile, Jennifer and David said that Ross and Rachel probably got married (again) and maybe had a few more kids. Unfortunately, they did not talk about Emma or Ben, played by Cole Sprouse, who was not on the reunion show. But both of them would be adults after all these years.
Meanwhile, Friends ended with Joey moving away and living through the spin-off series Joey. It seems that he remains a bachelor forever because Matt LeBlanc said that he hopes that the character opened a sandwich shop in Venice Beach, California. After all, sandwiches were always Joey’s favorite.
Another great surprise in the reunion special is that Lady Gaga showed up to sing “Smelly Cat,” Phoebe’s most popular song, with Lisa Kudrow. Many celebrities, such as Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber, expressed how much they loved the song. They sat on the couch of Central Perk and sang with a chorus at backup.
“Can I just say something?” Gaga told Kudrow. “Thank you so much for being the person for all of us on ‘Friends’ that was—I don’t know if this is the right way to say it—but the different one, or the one that was really herself.” The gesture completely touched Lisa. Next up—the character David Schwimmer always hated!
Schwimmer might love animals, but he had to work with two capuchin monkeys that played Marcel for some time in the earlier seasons. Unfortunately, they would constantly ruin shots and were difficult to work with. Additionally, the trainer would feed them on David’s shoulder, and he ended up with grubs all over him.
“I’d have monkey grubby hands all over,” he explained. “It was time for Marcel to [expletive] off.” At some point, Ross gave his monkey away. But don’t worry because those two monkeys, called Katie and Monkey in real life, continued their career in Hollywood. Meanwhile, Schwimmer also revealed something shocking about him and Jennifer Aniston.
When Corden asked the cast whether they ever dated each other, Schwimmer and Aniston finally admitted that they started having real feelings for each other when Rachel and Ross started dating. It’s something that audiences always speculated about, but it was never revealed until now!
As mentioned earlier, both of them were dating at the time. Jennifer was with Brad Pitt. Therefore, the actors could only express their feelings during their scenes together. “I remember saying one time to David, ‘It’s going to be such a bummer if the first time you and I actually kiss is going to be on national television,’” Aniston said.
However, they never crossed some boundaries because their personal lives were complicated. Essentially, they were crushing on each other during the worst timing possible. The only solution was to channel “all our adoration and love for each other into Ross and Rachel.”
Schwimmer said, “But it was like two ships passing because one of us was always in a relationship, and we never crossed that boundary. We respected that.” Can you imagine them dating back then? It would have made front-page news. Unfortunately, it could have also damaged the show.
If their hypothetical real relationship didn’t end well, it could have affected their work on the series. The cast admitted that while they knew about Aniston and Schwimmer’s feelings, they were glad nothing ever happened. It would have changed the dynamic of the group completely.
Corden also asked the cast about the age-old question in the world of Friends: were Ross and Rachel on a break? This was a debate for years, and Rachel always remained adamant that they were not. However, the entire cast agreed that the characters had taken a break. If you go back to watch those episodes, the answer is pretty clear.
Ross and Rachel dated for the first few seasons but were not together for most of the show. Interestingly, co-creator David Crane explained that writers thought about making the couple's ending a bit more ambiguous. But they had to please the audience. "People have been waiting 10 years to see this couple get together. We've got to give them what they want. We just have to find a way to do it, so the journey is unexpected,” he said.
The cast worked for ten years on the show, and they talked about things they had taken back then. The actors explained that the design team couldn’t recreate every detail because of these “stolen” items. Cox said that Monica had a cookie jar in her kitchen, but Kudrow had the original one at her house.
Meanwhile, Aniston had taken a mug from the original props, and LeBlanc ended up with the foosball that belonged to Chandler and Joey. It was just the tiny ball because they destroyed the table in the final season. Only eagle-eyed viewers would have noticed the missing cookie jar from Monica’s kitchen.
Where did the inspiration for this show come from? Marta Kauffman and David Crane were inspired by their own lives in NYC during their 20s, trying to make their careers happen. Additionally, Kauffman said that one of her friends was called Chandler. So, they name the character after him.
Crane said that the show is "about that time in your life when your friends are your family," which is why it ended perfectly. The characters moved on as they made their own families. Furthermore, that’s another reason why a reboot would not work. You cannot go back to that time. So, you have to enjoy it while it lasts.
Their love lives were never a secret unless they didn’t want to be photographed. But we’re glad to learn that Jennifer and David actually liked each other as their chemistry was off the charts. Let us know what you think of this huge revelation. If you liked this article, share it with your friends that loved the show. See you next time!
