Hilarious Photos Of Tennis Players Caught At The Right Moment

Sep 16, 2021Osh Ratnam

Tennis is an incredible sport, cardiovascular fitness, years of training, skill, talent, rivalry, exquisite grunts of effort, it has it all. Tennis superstars have become some of the most well-known athletes in the world, in some cases, achieving celebrity status. The difference between other celebrities and tennis players is that while other celebrities are paid to look good all the time, tennis players are paid to exert themselves. This means that at some perfect moments, they're captured on film at just the right (or wrong) time.

Football or Tennis?

All sports are basically the same right? She must have forgotten that this is supposed to be tennis and not soccer (football for you non-Americans). Let's just hope that she doesn't make this mistake in a game, a tennis ball traveling at 140mph could do serious damage.

Ew, Get It Away From Me!

Rafael Nadal isn't just the "King of Clay", or one of the best tennis players of all time. He is also a master in the ancient art of "The Ew Face" (not a real thing). The tennis legend saw something icky on the tennis ball and his face involuntarily expressed absolute disgust while his hand automatically recoiled.

What Is It!?

Not sure how it's possible, but it looks like this is the first time she has ever seen a tennis ball. The wide-eyed innocence and wonder on her face are childlike. Seriously, next time you see a baby, show them a tennis ball, and compare their face to hers.

To Be or Not to Be?

This is a loving rendition of the nunnery scene of William Shakespeare's play Hamlet, except on a tennis court. The opening phrase of the famous soliloquy by Prince Hamlet, "To be, or not to be, that is the question: Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer. The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, Or to take arms against a sea of troubles. And by opposing end them.", a prayer by a player about to lose, but holding on to hope, finding the motivation to go on.

Holding It In

We've all seen this face before. This is the face of someone who rode a rollercoaster and seriously regretted their decision. This is the face of someone who ate something that's coming back up. This is the face of someone who is about to hurl chunks all over the place. We just hope some poor ballboy didn't get any on them during the cleanup.

Facing Your Enemy

What could that ball have possibly done to her to deserve such a look? The complete and total disgust and hatred on her face lead us to believe that the ball was somehow instrumental in some deep personal tragedy from her past. Maybe the years of waking up at 5 a.m. and 8 hours a day of training finally got to her?

Just Ouch

This isn't a photo of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga doing a wild victory dance, his left hand gives a clue to what actually happened. It's never fun to be hit with a professional tennis serve, (they often top 140 mph) but being hit in the family jewels at that speed can elicit the strangest body contortions. Sadly, though Tsonga played on, his fortitude wasn't rewarded and he ended up losing the game.

Ew!!! Bugs Are Gross!

Martin Damm and Cyril Suk from the Czech Republic were in the semifinals of the Rome Masters back in 2003 when they spotted a huge cockroach on the court. The above photo was taken as they were running away as fast as they could moments after they first noticed the insect. (Not fact-checked).

Too Much Winning

Not only is there no way of knowing who this is, but there's also no conceivable way this is possible with our universe's laws of physics. Did the runner-up throw a second trophy at the winner? Is this man holding on to the face trophy with his mouth somehow? Someone, please let us know.

Tennis Ballet?

Italian Camila Giorgi was spotted at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in 2014 blending multiple physical disciplines into one. Her flexibility showcased her years of yoga practice, while her grace was thanks to her training as a ballerina. The calm, zen-like, expression on her face hints at the years of meditation she practiced while learning tennis on the fabled island of the minotaur.

Physics What?

Sometimes when you want something enough the entire universe seems to conspire to make it happen. The very laws of nature bend to your will and the impossible becomes possible. That's not what happened here. This man is just an incredible athlete captured at the right moment...and a wizard.

Tada!

Everyone watch out! Something incredible is about to happen! This is the face of a magician about to unveil his greatest trick, the hand and face are crucial elements for correctly casting the spell that's going to send that tennis ball into orbit around the moon.

A Different Kind Of Spell

Different but similar hand position, intense facial expression, this is obviously another magician casting a tennis-based spell. The directionality of her hand and the anger on her face leads us to believe that this is an attack spell, she really really wants this point.

The Dance Spell

Rounding out our trio of magicians we have the blue dancing warlock. Dressed in the traditional black headband and the flamboyant blue and white short shorts of his order, he was captured on camera in the middle of trying to cast a spell. His left hand though close, failed to perfectly mimic the ancient magical symbol emblazoned on his shirt, so the spell failed.

A Deep Hunger

Here's photographic evidence of why you should eat a good meal before playing a professional tennis match. There's a hunger in her eyes that can never be satiated. That ball, though inedible, is about to be devoured like a lioness tearing into a gazelle.

Come Hither

Novak Djokovic might be one of the all-time tennis greats, but he was captured here on the court at a fundraising event to support Haiti after the earthquake back in 2013 showing his alluring side. We're not sure who exactly he's trying to entice, but we're sure it worked.

Old-Timey Fun

This picture of Jimmy Connors pretending to kick a linesman was taken at the US Open in 1970. Jimmy Connors was playing a doubles match with former world number 1, Ilie Nastase of Romania, and was caught in the act, aiming a kick at the linesman while he was leaning over the net.

Shake It!

Here we have a picture of Rafael Nadal of Spain taking a moment to show off his moves while returning a shot to Dominic Thiem. One of the best tennis players of all time, the 34-year-old has recently faced accusations of being too old to play tennis and being too serious. His youthful dance moves on the court must be a response to these allegations.

The Sun Warrior

Pictured here is an Amazonian tennis player who gains strength from the sun. Her tan, an ode to our closest star, her scream a prayer for strength, the smiley face on her racket a symbol of her benefactor that always favors her. We hope it was an ace.

Calm Strength

Varvara Lepchenko from the United States returns a shot with so much power that the fuzz exploded off it. The calm on her face shows her level of total control, while her hand hints at some latent magical abilities.

Just Beautiful

This man was captured in a beautiful picture obviously mid-serve. Or conducting an orchestra. Or hugging the world. Or ballroom dancing with an invisible partner. Or performing a magic trick. Or welcoming the evening. Or just looking really cool.

Come At Me!

The one thing we know for sure is that you do not want to mess with her. She's always so ready to go that even an inanimate tennis ball cannot escape her intimidation moves. The most threatening thing about this is the crazy expression on her face, don't mess with crazy.

Excalibur

You all know about Excalibur right? The sword in the stone that could only be claimed by the rightful King of England? Well, this is an attempt to be the rightful King of the Court. Sadly, he not only missed the handle, but the sword is also obviously a fake.

How?

This is Gael Monfils, the laws of our universe do not apply to him. He's pictured here casually leaping over a human child as if it was no big deal. Honestly, we shouldn't allow 4th-dimensional beings to play tennis with us mere humans.

Hungry or Sneaky?

There are two conceivable ways this photo could have been taken. This is either finally a picture of a tennis player actually trying to devour a ball, or this is one of the sneakiest serves ever. That's it. There can be no other reasons. (It's definitely some other reason).

Good Ouch?

The picture makes it look like this poor man was hit in the face with a tennis ball. His face makes it look like pain is something he enjoys a little too much. Thanks to the photographer who captured this moment so perfectly.

Distractions

Sometimes you're out there on the court giving it your all, concentration at a hundred percent with laserlike focus. Sometimes right as you're about to hit that ball you catch sight of an incredibly attractive woman, and this is the face you make.

Call The Exorcist

Some people will do anything to achieve fame and money, including making deals with spirits, ghouls, and ghosts. This photo is proof that demon possession is a real thing and that the International Tennis Federation needs to keep exorcists on retainer.

Human Bodies Can Do This?

Maria Sharapova has been called one of tennis's best competitors over her long and successful career. The 5-time world number 1 has been playing professional tennis for over 15 years now and it's clear from the above photo that she like all the greats can make it seem like the impossible is possible.

We thank those tireless photographers who sit around in the heat, waiting for the ideal moment to capture the perfect moment. We especially thank those who capture moments that are hilarious, embarrassing, or just weird. These players give their all on the court, and we hope they don't mind that we've been poking fun at some of their more inelegant photos.
