Actors Who Were Supposed To Be The Next Big Thing

All actors and actresses chosen for this list were cast in a successful movie at some time, and it was predicted that they would become a big hit or were believed to be the next superstars. Unfortunately, things didn’t always go the way we want them to, so for various reasons, these actors were only able to brush with fame for a short period of time.

Shailene Woodley

In 2011, Shailene Woodley was part of the movie, The Descendants. Her performance was well-received by critics and managed even to gather numerous awards. She was featured as one of the 55 faces of the future in Nylon magazine's "Young Hollywood Issue.” Afterward, she was cast in Divergent, but the series didn't do well, so they've decided to move on to TV from the big screen, which didn't sit well with Shailene, and quit from the project. Soon after, she appeared in HBO’s Big Little Lies.

Megan Fox

Megan Fox had her breakout performance in 2007 in the famous action movie, Transformers. She also played a role in the Transformers sequel, Revenge of the Fallen, but she was out of the rest of the sequels in the series. And apparently it was all due to some negative comments she made about the director of the franchise. She then played a supporting role in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but other than that, her acting prospects seem quite desolate.

Taylor Lautner

In 2008, Taylor Lautner became an overnight success due to his portrayal of Jacob Black in the Twilight Saga. In the first movie of the series, Taylor was already getting a huge crowd of fans, mostly thanks to his looks. Teenagers especially admired him, but soon after his success with The Twilight Saga, no one was really impressed with his screen appearances anymore.

Eric Bana

Before making it to Hollywood, Eric Bana starred in the Australian sketch comedy called Full Frontal. He then began to attract Hollywood interest after he played a role in the war film, Black Hawk Down, in 2001, and then the lead in Hulk in 2003. After some disappointing appearances in even more disappointing movies, Bana has acted in some memorable supporting roles in Star Trek and Hanna. However, we believe that he deserves to be a leading actor in the future.

Minnie Driver

Minnie Driver managed to get an Academy Award nomination for her role in Good Will Hunting in 1997. The English-American actress has acted in quite a few movies and did a very good job as Fiona Bowa on the NBC sitcom, About a Boy. Because of her awards and positive critique that were given to her following her role in Good Will Hunting, there was a lot of hype surrounding her, but she never really managed to live up to it.

Brandon Routh

Brandon Routh had a good start in his acting career. Until 2006, when Brandon Routh was chosen to play Superman in Bryan Singer’s movie, Superman Returns. There were a lot of heavy expectations weighing on the actor's shoulders, especially after succeeding in previous iconic roles. The movie turned out to be a failure for everyone involved, and Brandon Routh has since been demoted to a less famous superhero role, in the TV series, Legends of Tomorrow.

Carrie-Anne Moss

Carrie-Anne Moss became a Hollywood sensation when she played Trinity in the Sci-Fi movies of The Matrix. The film was a huge success, and managed to earn an incredible sum of $460 million in gross earnings worldwide and was very well-received by critics as well. The movie basically launched the actress into worldwide fame, but Carrie-Anne’s role of Trinity proved to be a high point in her career that she'll probably never reach again.

Alex Pettyfer

Alex Pettyfer co-starred in the movies Magic Mike and I Am Number Four with some of the biggest names in the industry. He was very soon considered to be the next Hollywood sensation, but everything quickly crashed after a few infamous interviews where he came out as an arrogant and ungrateful person. Now, the once-promising actor is just a simple afterthought.

Emile Hirsch

Emile Hirsch's career was launched in 2002 when he appeared in The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys. Two years later, he acted in great hits like The Girl Next Door, Imaginary Heroes, Alpha Dog, and Lords of Dogtown. And then, in 2007, Emile Hirsch gave us a memorable performance in the movie Into the Wild. He tried more roles after that, and then the American actor settled for minor roles in lower-profile movie projects.

Saoirse Ronan

Saoirse Ronan had risen to fame due to her portrayal of a gifted teenager in the movie Atonement, for which she managed to get an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She then played in various prominent titles, but despite her numerous nominations and awards, she could never become a household name, even if her talent is undeniable.

Sam Worthington

Sam Worthington managed to gain some recognition after he was chosen for numerous minor roles in a few Hollywood films. He also tried and auditioned for the role of the iconic role of James Bond in Casino Royale, but lost it to another British actor, Daniel Craig. He eventually had his breakout in his acting career when he was cast as the protagonist in Avatar, which is one of the highest-grossing movies ever. But despite all that, the actor failed to become a well-known name in the movie industry.

Armie Hammer

Armie Hammer managed to become quite popular due to his role in The Social Network and is best known for portraying supporting characters in various other movies. The American actor garnered critical acclaim and several award nominations for his part in the film Call Me by Your Name. He seemed to have all it takes to succeed, but it turned out that he was only suited for playing supporting roles. He had his chance but didn’t quite make the most of it, and his window of opportunity had shut.

Leelee Sobieski

Leelee Sobieski was once almost chosen for the character of Claudia in the famous movie Interview with the Vampire, but in the end, she lost the role to Kirsten Dunst. Afterward, the American actress could be seen in various films, and during her mid-teens, she rose to fame and was considered a superstar in the making. But as years passed by, she wasn’t able to reach any higher than that, and nowadays, many people don't even know who she is anymore.

Shelley Duvall

During her acting career, Shelly Duvall gained significant praise for her work in numerous roles. After a number of breakthrough performances, including the movie The Shining, Shelly Duvall abruptly disappeared, not only from the movie industry but from the public spotlight as well. In November 2016, USA Today had said that the actress had isolated herself because she was dealing with some health issues.

Dakota Fanning

Dakota Fanning was raised to fame when she was only seven years old, after getting the role of Lucy Dawson, in the movie I am Sam. Dakota Fanning is a true prodigy, who managed to do at a very young age what most people can't even dream of. However, when she moved to more mature roles, her decline began as well. She is not so successful anymore, and she struggles to get the same acclaim that she used to when she was little.

Hayden Christensen

Hayden Christensen started his acting career when he was only 12 years old. At 13, he gained attention due to a small role in John Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness, landing him afterward in movies such as Goosebumps, The Virgin Suicides, and Are You Afraid of the Dark?. He made his breakthrough as the lead character portraying Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, but sadly this wasn't enough to propel him forward.

Josh Lucas

Josh Lucas began his acting career when he was only 19 years old, soon after he moved to Hollywood. The actor became famous due to his performances in Sweet Home Alabama, A Beautiful Mind, and Hulk. He enjoyed worldwide recognition due to other famous movies as well, but none of those managed to make him a true icon of the big screen. Josh Lucas is currently playing in a police procedural series called The Mysteries of Laura.

Mike Vogel

Before he started acting in big Hollywood films, Mike Vogel was just a model for Levi’s. After a number of movies and series, Mike Vogel’s biggest success as an actor was when he played in the remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre in 2003, which gathered some high box office ratings. He surely enjoyed his rise, but he didn't quite make it yet in Hollywood busts. He is currently playing a leading role in NBC’s new military series, The Brave.
