Miriam finds her husband's wedding ring hidden in his closet drawer while cleaning the house. The next day, she finds it again and realizes he's been taking it off before leaving for work. Wondering why he's doing that, Miriam decides to follow him and learns something shocking.

Miriam started with the living room and the kitchen, then moved on to the laundry. Like every other day, she set about her usual routine of cleaning the house after seeing Jack off as he left for work.

There was a huge pile of clothes in the laundry basket that needed to be taken care of, and Miriam sighed as she realized she would have little time to relax after finishing the laundry because she would need to start preparing lunch soon.

As Miriam finally took the clothes out of the dryer, she suddenly noticed a hole in Jack's sock. She almost laughed, shaking her head. "Really, Jack?" she chuckled. "You're still a child! How many times should I tell you to throw off your old socks?"

Miriam decided to check all his socks and throw away the ones that were in bad condition as she knew Jack was lazy and would keep putting it off. So, forgetting that she needed to relax, she put on her homemaker hat and marched to their bedroom…

As Miriam was sorting through the socks in his closet, she noticed several of them needed to be replaced. She collected damaged ones, making a mental note to get new pairs when something caught her eye.

Miriam noticed a familiar glimmer as she lifted a sock hidden in the drawer's corner. It seemed as if something was tucked away inside the garment, and as she pulled it out, she recognized it was her husband's wedding ring.

"Jack's ring?" she gasped. "How…How did it end up here?"

Miriam was puzzled and didn't understand why Jack's ring was in a sock in his closet drawer when he should've been wearing it. She shook her head, thinking Jack had obviously forgotten he'd kept it in the drawer. But on second thought, something about the way she found it neatly and carefully covered made it look like a deliberate attempt to hide.

She called Jack immediately, thinking he would have some idea about it. But when he didn't answer, she decided to call his office.

"Mrs. Parker? Good afternoon!" Jack's office secretary recognized her voice. "How is Mr. Parker doing now? We hope he's better. Anything I could do for you?"

Miriam was startled for a second. "Uh, yeah, Jack…he's fine. I'm sorry, but did something happen at work? I mean, he doesn't tell me if he is stressed about work. You know, he doesn't want to bother me."

"Oh… nothing unusual I can think of, ma'am. But Mr. Parker works unusually hard anyway. He's a great businessman, but he needs to prioritize his health. I hope he gets better soon and returns to the office. We're all waiting for him. You know, not seeing him for the past several days feels very…weird. Mr. Parker always greeted me right when he walked into the office!" the man chuckled and went on.

Miriam's heart sank as she understood Jack hadn't been to the office in days. But she maintained her composure.

"Oh, yeah. Classic Jack!" she faked a laugh. "He's…well, a workaholic. He'll be back soon, by the way. He's doing much better now. I was just calling on his behalf to ask if everything's okay at work. Anyway, it was nice hearing good things about him. Thank you. Have a good day."

As the call ended, it dawned on Miriam that Jack had been lying to her. But if he wasn't heading to his office when he left for work every morning, where was he going?

Miriam was really worried and couldn't focus on anything the entire day. She needed to know what was going on with Jack and waited for him to be home. But in the evening, a message from his number flashed on her phone screen:

"Hey, honey. Don't wait up for me today. Something came up at work, and I'll be late. So sorry :(("

A tear almost escaped Miriam's eyes as she watched her husband lie so effortlessly to her. But she contained her emotions and typed her usual response: "It's okay, babe. See you later…"

Miriam was sure now that Jack was hiding something from her, and she decided to wait for him, although he had told her not to. She would confront him the first thing when he was home.

But when Miriam opened her eyes, she noticed it was morning. She had dozed off waiting for Jack, and as she turned in bed to look at his side, she realized he was not there.

His side of the bed was still perfectly made, as if nobody had slept in there. Then she got the aroma of coffee and thought it was coming from the kitchen.

Miriam threw on her robe and dashed downstairs to see Jack at the kitchen table. He was done with his breakfast and was putting the dishes in the sink when he noticed her near the banister.

"Oh, morning, honey!" he smiled at her as he dried his hands on the kitchen towel. She noticed he was wearing the wedding ring now.

"You…in a rush today?" she asked, crossing her arms, as her gaze was drawn to the neatly-set breakfast table. He had made some scrambled eggs and toast with a cup of coffee for her.

"Yeah, honey," he walked over to her and pecked her on the cheek. "I've got a ton of things to take care of at work. And you were sleeping like a bear, so I decided not to wake you up," he smiled. "Instead, I made your favorite: Scrambled eggs!"

"Uh, well, thanks, Jack. But I wanted to talk to you about something. I was—" she started as he rounded her and headed toward the stairs. But before she could finish, he cut her off.

"Sorry, babe. Don't hate me, but I really am running late. Can we please put a pin on it?" he said, stopping momentarily on the stairs as she turned around to look at him.

"Look, I promise I'll try to be home on time so we can talk about whatever it is. Alright? But right now, I really gotta go. Please. Excuse me," he added and disappeared upstairs.

Miriam sat at the kitchen counter, barely focusing on the breakfast. Her heart was a bit relieved after seeing Jack wearing the wedding ring, and she knew she could always ask him later what the ring was doing in his closet.

But she also knew that he had lied to her. He was leaving home early these days and returning in the wee hours. And the pretense of it all was gnawing at her.

Miriam snapped out of her disturbing thoughts when she saw Jack emerge from their bedroom and walk out the front door with his office bag. She said goodbye, but he didn't stop to reply to her.

From the corner of her eye, Miriam noticed something unusual about Jack—he was wearing winter gloves!

As soon as she shut the door, Miriam jumped to her feet and dashed upstairs to their bedroom. She frantically checked Jack's closet drawer, where he kept all his socks.

"Oh, God! This can't be…" Miriam's hands went to her mouth in shock, and her heart fell. She had to grip the drawer to hold her balance when she found his wedding ring hidden in another sock this time!

Jack had removed his wedding ring yet again when he was leaving for work, and he had put on the gloves so that she wouldn't notice.

Miriam was shocked, to say the least. A man removing his wedding ring only meant one thing! But she couldn't accuse Jack of cheating until she had proof.

Miriam ran her fingers through her hair, panicking about what to do, and she saw only one choice. She got dressed and decided to follow Jack.

He wouldn't have gone far, she thought, as she took off on foot to the bus stop near their house.

And she saw him. There he was, checking his phone at the stop while waiting for the bus. But the bus he got on minutes later wasn't the usual one he took to work.

Miriam waited until he had boarded. Then she hurried over and boarded the crowded bus through a different entrance, choosing a seat far from his. Thankfully, he didn't notice her.

Keeping her head down, Miriam saw him typing something on his phone. Her heart raced with suspicion.

After what seemed like an eternity, the bus stopped, and Jack finally rose from his seat. She waited until he left, then paid her fare and exited the bus.

Miles away from their home now, Miriam saw him heading to a residential area from the stop, and soon, they were in a small neighborhood lined with modest homes.

Miriam hid behind a tree, watching Jack as he approached a small house and stood at its doorstep. He looked around before ringing the doorbell.

Moments later, the door opened, and a young woman appeared in the doorway. Miriam could have sworn the woman was at least 20 years younger than Jack! She felt like she would throw up when she saw Jack's hands slip lower down the woman's waist, and he pulled her closer to him. They stood in the doorway, kissing passionately. Then the door slammed shut, and they disappeared inside.

Miriam's gut churned, and she finally threw up near the tree. She couldn't believe it, but Jack was cheating on her. And that too, with a woman almost two decades younger than him!

Miriam wanted to storm inside the house and catch her husband and his mistress red-handed. The way they were kissing each other only indicated they must be in bed now, naked, in each other's arms.

But that would shatter Miriam's home and cause her marriage to fall apart. After all, if Jack learned that she knew about his relationship with his mistress, he would easily leave her and move on with his new love. Miriam couldn't afford that. She couldn't lose her husband to another woman younger, prettier, sexier than her.

It would feel like someone smacked her right across her face. So Miriam chose a different path. She decided to get Jack's new lover out of the picture, caring less about what she would have to do in the process. That would restore order in the world.

Miriam sat at a café across the street from the young woman's house, watching every movement. At around seven in the evening, the front door opened, and Jack kissed the woman again as he left the house. As Miriam saw the woman head back inside, she paid her bill and left the café.

Standing on the woman's doorstep, Miriam knocked and waited. Moments later, the door finally opened, and the same woman appeared in the doorway.

"Yes?" she asked with a smile. "Can I help you?"

"Hi, uh…I'm Miriam. You don't know me, but…Look, I won't beat around the bush. I saw you with my husband, and I know what's going on between the two of you. Can I come inside and talk?"

"Excuse me?!" The woman's brows furrowed. "Well, I think you're at the wrong address, lady. I don't know what you're talking about."

The woman began closing the door, but Miriam stopped her.

"No, wait! Please! Jack. The man you're dating…his name is Jack, right? He's my husband. And I'm his wife of 20 years," Miriam said, raising her hand to show her wedding ring.

"He is not who he's pretending to be. Jack is cheating on me. And he's keeping you in the dark! Look," Miriam showed her Jack's wedding ring, then his pictures on her phone.

"He's been taking the ring off before leaving for work."

As the woman looked at the pictures, her face twisted in shock.

"OMG! I…I can't believe this!" she gasped. "So...he's been lying to me? I'm sorry about this, I am. I had no idea, I swear...you have to believe m—?"

"Look. I don't want to create a scene here. I'd like to come in first," Miriam said, and the woman finally took her inside.

She introduced herself as Tessa and listened in shock as Miriam narrated how things had unfolded in the past few days—Jack removing his wedding ring and hiding it in the closet, and how he lied to her that he was leaving for work when instead, he was coming to Tessa's house every day.

"I love him. I really do," Miriam said sadly. "We had built a happy life for ourselves, and I'd never thought I'd see a day like this. I—I didn't have the slightest doubt he would do something like this until…I was doing the laundry this afternoon. I still can't believe I'm here, talking to you."

"I—I don't know what to say either…" Tessa sighed, averting Miriam's gaze while they sat at the kitchen counter. "We actually met at a bar. Six months ago. I was with a few work friends, and Jack just approached me and asked me if I'd like a drink. He wasn't wearing a wedding ring, and I thought he was single. I found him very charming, and while I don't usually accept favors from strangers, I don't know why...I thought, what harm could one drink do?

"But then we met again a week later…at the same bar. And I learned our offices were close by. We began meeting every day and went from being acquaintances to 'friends.' But we both knew whatever was between us…was definitely not just friendship.

"The way he looked at me, and the way I felt for him…I'm sorry," she finished as she looked up at Miriam, who had tears in her eyes. "I know he's your husband, but I couldn't stop myself from falling in love with him. And…I know he loves me too."

Only Miriam knew how hard it was for her not to fall apart after learning about her husband's infidelity. She wanted to scream and cry. But she was here to sort the mess, not pity herself, so she composed herself.

"Look, Tessa," she said, swallowing her tears. "I'm not blaming you. I know you were not aware that Jack is a married man. And I—I am not judging you for anything that you did. But you have to understand that whatever you have with Jack has to end. He has a home. A family. A wife and an 8-year-old son. You can't destroy someone else's family. You don't have that right."

"I'm not destroying anyone's home," Tessa said brazenly, staring right into Miriam's eyes.

"It's not my fault if Jack doesn't love you anymore, Miriam. I love Jack like I've never loved anyone before, and I know he feels the same. You may have been married to him for a thousand years, but what's the point of marriage when there's no love? He clearly won't love you as much as he loves me. So…maybe it's you who should back off and not me?"

Miriam was taken aback by the young woman's audacity and felt as if she would explode from all the anger rising within her. But before she would say another word, a voice distracted them.

"Who are you?"

Miriam and Tessa turned to look at the kitchen entrance, where a little girl stood. She had pretty blue eyes and looked a lot like Tessa, but Miriam's eyes first captured the lack of hair on the girl's head.

Looking no older than six, the little girl was completely bald, and Miriam could only draw one conclusion after noticing the dark hollows under her eyes and her pale skin.

"When are we going to start watching cartoons?" the girl continued, looking at Tessa.

"Are you joining us? Hi, I'm Lily," she told Miriam.

"We're almost done here, sweetie. How about you go inside and wait? I think you should leave, Miriam," Tessa faked a smile as she stood up.

Miriam couldn't stop looking at the little girl as she rose to her feet and saw the girl walk away. "Is she your daughter?" Miriam asked.

"That's none of your business," Tessa replied, looking away from her as Miriam approached the door. "Please leave. Don't show up here ever again. Goodbye."

"I see she has cancer," Miriam held Tessa's hand, but the young woman immediately pulled her hand away.

"Don't touch me!" she hissed. "Just leave!"

"I can help you," Miriam said, looking around Tessa's modest home. From the faded wallpapers in the living room, second-hand furniture, and humble living conditions of the house, anyone could make out that Tessa was just getting by.

"If you leave my husband, I'll pay for Lily's treatment. Fully," Miriam proposed. "I received an inheritance from a distant relative, but Jack doesn't know about it. $100,000. That's a rough approximation that I've received after the deduction of taxes and everything. And I'm ready to give it to you in cash if you do as I say."

Miriam noticed there were tears in Tessa's eyes now. Tessa was surely debating whether to take her offer.

"Make a wise choice, girl," Miriam continued. "I know the money I'm offering you would be enough for Lily's chemotherapy and for the two of you to start a new life in a new city! I can bring the money to you tomorrow! So…what do you think?"

Tessa tearfully looked at Lily's picture in the living room, and after a brief pause, she nodded.

"Well, then, I'm guessing it's a yes!" Miriam said cheerfully. "You made the right choice, young lady! Trust me; you won't regret it. So…I'll meet you at two tomorrow. I hope that works?"

Tessa nodded as Miriam left the house. And the next day, Miriam returned and paid Tessa the money in cash, keeping her word. Tessa promised Miriam that she would walk away from her and Jack's life forever and never return to the city. As a result, Miriam's chest felt lighter, and she was relieved as she returned home.

A few days passed. Miriam never noticed any particular change in Jack's demeanor after her meeting with Tessa. However, she was glad to see that he had stopped taking off his wedding ring before he left for work, and she assumed it was because Tessa had left town. Finally, the balance in her world was restored, Miriam thought.

But Miriam's worst fears were realized soon. When she was going through Jack's closet on the fourth day after her meeting with Tessa, she gasped after finding his wedding ring in the closet drawer again!

Just like the previous time, his wedding band was hidden in a sock in a corner. Without thinking twice, Miriam drove to Tessa's house, and this time, she marched to the front door and kept banging on it.

A few moments later, she heard heavy footsteps approaching the door. Miriam's fists tightened as she saw Jack appear in the doorway.

"Mmm—Miriam?! What—What are you doing here?" His eyes widened in horror as if he had seen a ghost.

"What am I doing here?!" she fumed. "God, you can't be serious! Has your office changed locations? It's time for you to give me the bloody answer, Jack! How the hell did you end up here when you were supposed to be at work?!"

"Jack, who's there?"

Before Jack could say a word, a familiar voice called out to him. Miriam couldn't believe it when Tessa appeared in the doorway and stood beside Jack.

"Wow! So this is how you follow through on your words?" Miriam lashed out at Tessa, giving her a disgusting look. "You manipulative homewrecker! How dare you return here after you promised me you'd leave this town forever?! You thought I was a fool and I'd never get to know? Huh?!"

"Do you know each other?" Jack looked at Miriam, then at Tessa. "Where were you supposed to go, Tessa? What's going on?"

Tessa crossed her arms and glared at Miriam. "Your wife came to meet me four days ago after you had left, Jack. She wanted me out of your life in exchange for $100,000. She bribed me. Said she would pay for Lily's chemotherapy if I left you. And I did agree. But—"

"What the hell?! $100,000?" Jack was shocked as he looked at Miriam. "Where did you get all that money from? And you bribed her?"

"Look, Miriam, you're a good woman," Tessa said. "And yes, I should have done as you said. I wanted to!"

"Then what the hell are you doing here?! I had asked you to leave us, Tessa! And you…here you are! With my husband! In your goddamn house!"

"Look, I'm sorry, Miriam. I tried, okay? I really tried! But...I couldn't stop loving Jack. I couldn't just forget him and move on…I love him more than anything. And he loves me, too. So I had to come back. I couldn't stay away from him."

"You heard her, Jack, didn't you?" Miriam was in tears. "She claims to love you! Come on, Jack! You know we've been married for over 20 years! And this girl thinks she can win you over in just a few months. End years of our love and trust in each other! For God's sake, come home with me! Okay? She…she is 20 years younger than you, Jack! Don't do this! I'll forgive you for everything! Just come with me! Please! Why destroy our happy family for her?!"

But Jack averted his gaze.

"Well, if you already know everything, I think this question becomes even easier to answer," he began, looking her in the eye. "I respect you, Miriam…as a woman, as my son's mother…I appreciate everything you do for us. You are very special to me, but the special thing between us cannot be termed love anymore. We both know that. I love Tessa. And I don't feel the same way for you."

"Oh, please, Jack! Don't you give me that nonsense!" Miriam stared at him angrily. "Do you think sleeping with a woman you only met six months ago is love?! Snap to your senses for our family's sake, Jack! What is our son going to think of you when he grows up?!"

"I will support you and Harry after we divorce. And that's all I can do for you right now. Forget me and move on…This relationship is killing both of us," he sighed. "I don't want to force it on you, and I feel suffocated that I have to look for ways and lie to you to spend time with Tessa and Lily. I...I think I've answered what you wanted to know, so please let me go."

"Oh, God! Can't you see what she's trying to do?!" Miriam screamed. "I can't believe some young spinster brainwashed you. But well, if you think I'll stand here and beg, that's not going to happen, Jack. And you, I want my money back!" She glared at Tessa. "Every penny!"

"I—I don't have it with me now," Tessa looked away.

"You don't have it? What the hell do you mean?! You didn't keep your word, so you better get me my money!"

"I will get you the money, Miriam, but…" Tessa sighed and shook her head. "I need some time. I already paid for Lily's expensive treatment and chemotherapy. Sorry. I promise you I'll pay back every penny I owe you," she added as Jack placed an arm around her shoulder.

"She's saying she'll pay you back, Miriam. Stop harassing us!"

"Didn't she make another promise which she failed to keep? How dare you spend my money and then show up at my door?" Miriam asked angrily. She felt a rage take over, and she knew that if she didn't leave immediately, she would end up doing something very wrong that she would regret for the rest of her life.

Miriam gave Tessa a warning to return her money as soon as possible and left.

Everything changed in Miriam's life in the next few days. Jack had already taken his things and moved out, and he had started living with Tessa and Lily. Miriam didn't say any angry words to him when he visited her and told her he would send her the divorce papers soon.

Instead, she told him she had accepted whatever had happened and was trying to move on. But a cunning plan was brewing at the back of Miriam's head. And she only had one goal in her mind now—to get her revenge on the woman who had stolen her husband.

So one night, while she was alone at home, Miriam made an online purchase on the black market and bought a vial of a specific kind of poison that showed results quickly but couldn't be traced easily in the blood.

Once Miriam received it, she couldn't wait to see how Tessa cried in pain when the toxins mingled with her blood. But she needed the perfect opportunity to use it, which presented itself when Jack came to her house one day to take their 8-year-old son for a walk.

"So…where are you both planning to go? I want Harry to be home safe and before 8," Miriam told him.

"Really, Miriam? You think you're leaving him in inexperienced hands? Are you doubting my parenting? I'm his Dad!"

"You're getting me wrong, Jack. I never said that," she calmly replied, playing the good ex-wife. "It's just that…I'm worried, okay? Come on. As his mother, I deserve to know where he is going."

"To the zoo," he told her. "Tessa is going to the gym today after work, so Harry and I will take her gym bag with training stuff to her, and after that, we'll go to the zoo while she's at the gym. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to use the bathroom."

"Okay, fine. Yeah, sure. You know the way," she replied, giving him space to leave.

Miriam knew this was the perfect opportunity. She rushed to her room to get the poison vial and emptied the toxic liquid into Tessa's gym sipper, which was lying unattended on the passenger seat in Jack's car.

"See you soon, baby!" She waved at Harry later as she saw him leave with his father.

At home, Miriam waited for the good news that Tessa was battling for her life. But only twenty minutes later, her phone rang, and Jack's number flashed across the screen.

"Miriam, please come to the city hospital now!" Jack sounded worried on the call. "I'm taking Harry there! I—I don't know what happened, but he said he was thirsty, and I only had Tessa's sipper in the car, so I asked him to have water from that. And Harry…he just passed out. He's not responding…I tried everything! Please come to the hospital!"

Miriam's phone slipped from her grasp, and she let out a soft cry. Then she sank to the floor as she realized the horror of what she had done.
