Bonnie Tyler Sang ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ for a Final Time Months Before Her Death

No one realized that March evening was that the crowd was witnessing the singer's very last live performance. Just weeks later, a devastating health crisis would change everything.

Bonnie Tyler belted out her signature hit, "Total Eclipse of the Heart," during what turned out to be her final concert months before her unexpected death. The Grammy-nominated artist took the stage at London's Shepherd's Bush Empire on March 19.

Beaming throughout the performance, she delivered the beloved '80s power ballad while extending the microphone toward the crowd, inviting them to sing along.

Tyler, looking vibrant and in good spirits that night, owned the stage in an all-black look finished with sparkling accents. She wore a tailored black blazer featuring bold gold buttons layered over a sequined top, matched with sequined pants.

A single chain necklace with an oversized heart-shaped pendant completed her outfit, while her blonde locks fell in soft, loose curls.

Though she was slated to perform in Cardiff just two days later, that show was pushed back. By the end of April, Tyler had been hospitalized in Faro, Portugal, following a serious tear in her bowel.

She underwent emergency intestinal surgery and was subsequently placed in a medically induced coma due to complications from the procedure.

During doctors' initial attempt to bring her out of the coma, Tyler suffered cardiac arrest, though she eventually woke up in June. Still, her team clarified at the time that she remained "seriously ill" and faced a "slow ... recovery process" ahead.

News of her death at age 75 broke on Thursday, July 9, 2026.

"Bonnie's family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for," a representative said in a statement.

The statement continued, "We will issue a further statement shortly but for now ask for privacy to deal with this tragedy."

Shortly before her final London show, Tyler spoke with Hello! Magazine about how she still felt strong enough to perform at her age, crediting her commitment to staying active.

"I'm fit enough at the moment, touch wood, and I'm really enjoying doing the shows. I'm still rocking on that stage with my wonderful band, and if you've got your health, you've got everything," she said at the time.

"I do home Pilates, only 20 minutes a day - it's something I can do in my hotel rooms. I have had problems with my knees; I didn't have new knees, I had what they call washouts [a surgical knee procedure], which turned out to be very successful," she shared. "So, hopefully that will last for a long time."

Beyond "Total Eclipse of the Heart," the Welsh singer — born Gaynor Sullivan and celebrated for her distinctive raspy vocals — also topped charts in the '70s and '80s with hits like "It's a Heartache" and "Holding Out for a Hero."

Today, fans are remembering and honoring that legacy.

"Bonnie Tyler passing away today at 75 years old is so sad knowing that she made up most of our childhood. She sang holding out for a hero which was the song to the shrek movie. A legend will be missed [sic]," one person said.
