"It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden," the statement, shared by Panettiere's representative on behalf of her father, read.

"She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen."

Panettiere died on Sunday, August 16, 2026, just days before what would have been her 37th birthday on August 21. The cause of death has not yet been disclosed. Her father asked for privacy as her "family takes time to process this unimaginable loss."

Born in 1989 in Palisades, New York, Panettiere was still a toddler when her acting career took off. In 1994, she landed her first major role as Sarah Roberts on the ABC soap opera "One Life to Live," staying with the show until 1997.

A year earlier, she had made a brief appearance on CBS's "Guiding Light" as Lizzie Spaulding, a role she later reprised from 1997 to 2000. While building her television résumé, Panettiere was also breaking into film. At just 9 years old, she voiced Princess Dot and narrated Pixar's "A Bug's Life" (1996).

She went on to land one of her most memorable early roles as the football-obsessed daughter of assistant coach Bill Yoast, portrayed by Will Patton, in the biographical drama "Remember the Titans" (2000).

Over the following years, Panettiere took on a string of notable projects, appearing in "Ally McBeal" and "Malcolm in the Middle," along with films like "Bring It On: All or Nothing," "Tiger Cruise," and "Ice Princess."

Her career reached new heights in 2006 when she joined the cast of NBC's "Heroes," playing a cheerleader with self-healing abilities — a role that catapulted her to international stardom.

After the series wrapped in 2010, she went on to star in "Scream 4" (2011) and later returned to the franchise for "Scream 6" in 2023.

While still working on "Heroes," Panettiere booked another defining role opposite Connie Britton in ABC's "Nashville," which ran for six seasons from 2012 to 2018.

Following the show's conclusion, she stepped away from acting for a period before returning with "Scream 6."

More recent credits include 2024's "Amber Alert" and 2025's "A Breed Apart." Her final film, "Sleepwalker," premiered in theaters this past January. Beyond acting, Panettiere also pursued music throughout her career.

In her personal life, Panettiere welcomed a daughter, Kaya Evdokia Klitschko, in December 2014 with then-fiancé Wladimir Klitschko. The former couple co-parented Kaya for four years before Panettiere granted full custody to Klitschko in 2018. Kaya is now 11.

Panettiere is survived by her mother and is preceded in death by her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, who died in 2023 at age 28 from complications related to enlarged heart syndrome.
