For Angelina Jolie, "Couture" is not just another film set against a dazzling international backdrop. The upcoming drama arrives after years in which her own life, family history, and public advocacy have made its themes feel especially close to home.

Angelina Jolie Leads the Deeply Personal 'Couture'
Jolie's first film since "Maria" is heading to theaters this summer, with Vertical releasing the trailer for "Couture" on May 20, 2026. The film stars the iconic actress as Maxine, an American filmmaker who travels to Paris during Fashion Week.

What begins as a professional trip soon becomes something far more complicated, as Maxine finds herself pulled between a major project, a romance with a Frenchman, played by Louis Garrel, and a devastating breast cancer diagnosis.

The actress became visibly moved after an audience member, who had recently lost a friend to cancer, asked what message of hope the cast had for people still struggling with the disease.
According to the film's official synopsis, Maxine is drawn into a love story with a longtime collaborator while crossing paths with women from different generations and cultural backgrounds. Each woman is fighting, in her own way, to regain control over her future.

That journey pushes Maxine toward a deeper reckoning with herself, forcing her to face the decisions that have shaped her life and the ones still ahead.
Along with Jolie and Garrel, "Couture" also stars Ella Rumpf, Garance Marillier, Anyier Anei, and Vincent Lindon. Jolie also served as a producer on the film, adding another layer of personal investment to the project.

Jolie, whose mother, Marcheline Bertrand, died of ovarian and breast cancer in January 2007 at 56, first offered her condolences before sharing a memory from her mother's illness:

"I think I will say that one thing I remember my mother saying when she had cancer, she said to me once, we had had a dinner and people were asking her how she was feeling and she said, 'All anybody ever asks me about is cancer.'"
Her advice was to ask about the rest of their lives, too, because they are still whole people who are living beyond their diagnosis. The subject has long been personal for Jolie. In 2013, she underwent a preventive double mastectomy after learning she carried the BRCA1 gene.
At the time, she said doctors had estimated she had an 87 percent risk of developing breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer. Her family history with the disease also included her aunt and grandmother, who died of cancer.

During the same TIFF discussion, writer-director Alice Winocour emphasized that "Couture" was not intended to be a bleak story about cancer. Instead, she described the film as being about life and survival.
The film arrives in theaters on June 26, bringing Jolie back to the big screen in a role that blends elegance, vulnerability, and resilience.
