Taylor Swift Donates $50K to Mom Severely Injured in Brave Act of Kindness

The pop superstar's $50,000 gift has given the badly injured nurse and mother of three a financial lifeline as she faces a grueling, months-long recovery.

Taylor Swift is paying it forward. The "Shake It Off" singer recently made headlines after news broke that she'd donated $50,000 to help a Connecticut mom recover after she was struck by a car while saving the lives of teenagers whose own vehicle had hydroplaned on a rainy afternoon.

Ashly Taunton, a certified nursing assistant, wife, and mother of three, told People in a recent interview that she was driving on I-95 South in Rhode Island this past July with her youngest daughter when she spotted what looked like an accident up ahead.

The 42-year-old explained to the outlet that she couldn't bring herself to drive past people in distress. "When I see there's somebody in trouble, I tend to want to go help," she said.

Roughly 30 yards from the crash site, Taunton pulled over, stepped out of her car, and instructed her daughter to stay put and call her husband. As she approached the stranded vehicle, she found a driver and two passengers, all teenagers, inside.

She noticed that "they were a little bit banged up, but seemed relatively okay." Moments later, however, a second car lost traction and came hurtling toward the group as Taunton stood talking with them.

According to a crash report she previously shared with People, the other driver lost control of their vehicle, which was traveling in the second lane of I-95 southbound, due to wet and slippery road conditions.

With barely a second to react, Taunton shoved the teen nearest to her — later identified as Vinny — out of the vehicle's path just before it slammed into her instead.

"It just felt like a big explosion," Taunton recalled. "I just remember being on the ground and I could see my ankle was just hanging there. I went to try to get up and I couldn't breathe."

Her daughter rushed to her side and held her hand until paramedics arrived. In those anxious minutes, Taunton feared the worst. "I knew I had internal bleeding," she said. "I thought, 'That was it.' Then in the ambulance as well, I was just praying — I didn't want to die."

She was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital with a series of life-threatening injuries, including bilateral internal carotid artery dissection, lacerations to her liver and spleen, multiple rib fractures, and a ruptured diaphragm.

Speaking with People from her hospital bed, Taunton said doctors had yet to give her a discharge date, but estimated that her recovery, including physical therapy, could stretch on for up to 12 months.

As medical bills piled up in the aftermath, a family friend named Laura Ortelt launched a GoFundMe to help lighten the load. At the time of writing, the campaign had raised $94,250 toward its $110,000 goal.

Despite everything she's endured, Taunton remains deeply grateful simply to have survived. She said the experience has reshaped how she views her time and priorities. "Life is very busy and it's easy to postpone plans like, especially with friends and loved ones," she said.

"I don't want to do that anymore," she continued. "I want to make sure that I am taking time, even if it's just going to grab a coffee with a friend, because we never know how you're going to leave this earth."
