As Natacha Bonjout, a French pharmacist who's been living and working in New York for over a decade, explains, "The cosmetic is your best friend, but it will never replace the inner power of your skin."
Her personal beauty ethos is always "consume less, but consume better." Below you'll find five beauty tips to help you curate your very own French girl beauty routine.

French Girl Beauty Tips
1. Let Biomimetic Ingredients Do the Work
Your skin responds best to what it already understands. As Bonjout explains, "By using ingredients that mimic those produced by your skin, biomimetic skincare helps your skin function at its best."
She highlights options like ceramides, peptides, and amino acids as examples of ingredients the body can easily interpret. When the skin recognizes something as familiar, "it allows it to penetrate deeper into the skin and work more effectively than a non-biomimetic ingredient," she says.

This approach supports the idea of "decoding the skin's language replicating a biological process," helping maintain balance and resilience without overwhelming it.

2. Choose Complementary Skincare Actives
Bonjout cautions against mixing too many potent ingredients at once. "Don't overload your skin—only use actives that work together," she advises, noting that combining the wrong formulas can lead to irritation or simply cancel out their benefits.
For example, a good mix is a Vitamin C and a protective SPF, or a retinol and a hydrating hyaluronic acid. However, she cautions against applying retinol with vitamin C as she notes it can lead to irritation and inflammation.

Additionally, layering retinol and niacinamide will simply "cancel each other out." A thoughtful pairing, she adds, prevents unnecessary stress on the skin: "A good skin-care routine is about targeted products that really deliver because our skin doesn't like being overstressed."

3. Rethink Your Morning Routine
To protect the skin barrier, Bonjout recommends skipping a full cleanse first thing in the morning. Instead, a light rinse or a mist is enough to refresh your face. "Every night, your skin reconstitutes its flora to protect itself," she says, so there's no need to strip it again.
She prefers double cleansing in the evening — especially after sunscreen or makeup — to gently remove buildup from environmental exposure. When she stays home, she keeps her routine minimal, saying she simply cleans her skin with a mild lotion or micellar water.

4. Apply Your Skincare Products and Makeup Using Your Hands
Bonjout prefers using her fingers for both skincare and makeup, crediting the technique with both practical and emotional benefits. "Massage is therapeutic for boosting our confidence and reducing stress and anxiety," she says.
In France, people often get monthly facials, and she praises her go-to practitioners for their transformative touch. "It looks very strange, but it's worth it," she adds of the massage techniques she recommends.

5. Prioritize a Consistent Cut
According to Paris-based editorial makeup artist Violette, French women place more value on the shape and health of their haircut than on the styling products they use. Because of this, even a tousled look appears intentional and polished.
"French women like their hair to be very healthy and shiny, so when they wear it messy, it doesn't look dry and damaged," she says. "We're much more about looking for a good haircut than a good styling product." She adds that most French women like short or shoulder-dusting crops.

Together, these habits reflect the French approach to beauty: simple, intentional, and rooted in caring for what you naturally have.
By focusing on healthy skin, thoughtful product pairings, and low-maintenance hair that still feels polished, you can bring a touch of that effortless French charm into your own routine—no overthinking required.
