The billionaire TV producer was speaking at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, where she touched on multiple chapters of her life: her rise from humble and traumatic beginnings, her philanthropic work, the school she built in South Africa, and her storied career as a talk show host.
It was during this appearance that she also revisited her memorable interviews with the late "Greatest Love of All" singer on "The Oprah Winfrey Show."

Winfrey recalled how she set the tone before cameras even rolled.
"We did the whole, 'Hey girl, how you doing?' greeting thing and then I stopped the cameras and I went behind stage and I said, 'So tell me, what do you want to happen here? And I'm gonna tell you what I want to happen here,'" she said. "And that was one of the most powerful interviews."

Houston would eventually return to the show to perform — but by that point, Winfrey said, she had relapsed. "I had such trust from 'The Oprah Show' audience … I think it was [Houston's] last show with us, and she had gone back on drugs," Winfrey said.
She explained, "The first interview I did with her when we'd gone behind stage and I asked her about her intention, she was clean, but the day she came to my show then to perform in front of the audience, she was not, and she fell off of the stage."

Winfrey immediately grasped the magnitude of what had happened. "I knew that if that story got out … she would be destroyed by that," she said. Her response was swift and deliberate.
"And so even though the audience was there and the audience had cameras, I begged them not to put those pictures out because it would ruin her life, and they did not. That would not happen today, I can tell you that."

Houston died on February 11, 2012, at the age of 48 following an accidental drowning. She was found unresponsive and submerged in the bathtub of her suite at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.
The "Exhale" singer had reportedly spoken with her mother around 3:15 p.m. and appeared to be fine. Less than 30 minutes later, at 3:43 p.m., her assistant discovered her in the bathroom and hotel security was called.

Police officers arrived within minutes, as they were already on the premises preparing for the late Clive Davis' pre-Grammy Awards party that evening. Emergency responders attempted CPR, but Houston was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m.

The coroner's report later revealed that heart disease and cocaine use were contributing factors to her death. As news of her passing rippled across the globe, tributes poured in from fans and fellow artists alike.

Winfrey was among the first to honor her. "To me Whitney was THE VOICE. We got to hear a part of God every time she sang. Heart is heavy, spirit grateful for the GIFT of her," she wrote.
Other icons were equally grief-stricken. Tony Bennett, Smokey Robinson, Toni Braxton, and Mariah Carey all shared heartfelt messages. "She will never be forgotten as one of the greatest voices to ever grace the earth," Carey wrote on X.
