America has a new Idol, but not everyone is ready to celebrate.

The Season 24 finale aired on May 11, and while host Ryan Seacrest delivered the results and confetti filled the stage, the conversation unfolding online was far more divided.

Within hours, fans of both Keyla Richardson and Jordan McCullough were making their feelings known, and the conversation about who truly deserved the title has not let up since.

She Sewed Her Own Audition Dress and Sang About Postpartum Depression

Hannah Harper was named the winner of "American Idol" 2026, becoming the first female country artist to claim the title since Carrie Underwood.

The 25-year-old stay-at-home mom of three from Willow Springs, Missouri, had been one of the season's most talked-about contestants from the very first episode.

She arrived at her audition in a colorful patchwork dress she had sewn herself and performed an original song about postpartum depression called "String Cheese," which reportedly became one of the show's most-watched videos on social media.

By the end of the finale, Harper was standing beneath falling confetti with tears in her eyes. She told USA TODAY: "I'm a puddle right now."

On Instagram, she wrote:

"Thank you to every single person who believed in me, prayed over me, voted, and helped carry this dream farther than I ever could've imagined. Y'all changed my life."

Her Mom Spoke Up, and Fans Backed Her Up Loudly

Richardson, the 29-year-old music teacher and mom from Pensacola, Florida, had been one of the competition's frontrunners from her very first audition. When she finished third, the reaction from those closest to her was instant.

In a since-deleted Facebook post, her mother insisted that her daughter had not failed and strongly suggested she believed Richardson deserved a different outcome.

The post quickly became a rallying point for fans who felt the singer had been overlooked in the final results.

"I was very shocked there is no way she didn't win, she had ALL of Pensacola and others supporting around the world," one fan wrote, another adding, "Don’t be negative about it she wasn’t robbed who needed to hear her heard her!!!"

Another offered a more faith-driven perspective: "Keyla was on a much higher assignment, this is only her beginning." A third simply said, "She was absolutely wonderful, this is just a stepping stone."

Richardson herself responded on Instagram with the energy of someone who has no intention of disappearing quietly. "Season 23 and Season 24 3rd place finalist! It's NOT BAD AT ALL, it's actually GREAT. I'm excited about what's coming, It's only up from here!" she wrote.

In a separate post, she added:

"The journey has been amazing, we are just getting started 💛 #Idol."

The Runner-Up Left Everyone Speechless, Too

While Richardson's supporters were vocal, McCullough's fans were equally convinced their favorite had been overlooked. The 27-year-old worship director from Tennessee drew some of the season's most extraordinary praise.

Week after week, McCullough built a loyal following through powerhouse vocals, emotional performances, and a calm stage presence that many viewers felt made him finale-ready from the start.

Abdul later praised his duet with Elliott Yamin, describing the performance as both a master class and worthy of the Grammy stage.

Backstage after the finale, McCullough told Gold Derby he was still struggling to process just how far he had made it in the competition, going from a hopeful audition contestant to the runner-up of "American Idol." He added:

"I'm waiting to wake up because that just can't be the truth."

His fans were just as unconvinced by the outcome. "Congratulations to Hannah but Jordan most definitely should have won," one commenter wrote.

The One Comment That Said Everything

At the heart of all of it is a question that resurfaces every season: what does an American Idol winner actually need to be?

One fan comment cut straight to the point, "Jordan has the better voice but, Hannah will probably be more popular after due to the fact she writes her own music."

Others were not willing to take sides at all. "The most talent in American Idol in a very long time!! Jordan is wonderful as well as Hannah!" one viewer wrote.

"All top 3 are fantastic singers and will go far!!" said another, while a third admitted quietly: "I do like Hannah but I was rooting for Keyla."

Harper connected through songwriting and deeply personal storytelling. Richardson stunned audiences with powerhouse vocals that impressed judges from her very first audition.

McCullough inspired admiration through versatility and control that many viewers felt rivaled past Idol standouts. Three very different artists — and three very different ideas of what an Idol winner should be.

And if this season proved anything, it’s that "American Idol" viewers are still deeply invested in discovering the next breakout star. And for anyone now inspired to take their shot, "American Idol" has already announced in-person auditions at CMA Fest in Nashville on June 5th.
