According to court documents filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California on May 8, Lipa alleged that Samsung used a copyrighted backstage image of her on cardboard packaging for televisions sold nationwide.

The complaint stated that the singer's face was "prominently used for a mass marketing campaign for a consumer product" without her knowledge or approval. Her legal team further claimed that the image created the false impression that the singer endorsed or was affiliated with the televisions.
The photograph at the center of the dispute was reportedly taken backstage during Lipa's 2024 Austin City Limits Festival performance. According to the filing, the image is registered with the U.S. Copyright Office under the title "Dua Lipa - Backstage at Austin City Limits, 2024."

The lawsuit includes allegations of copyright infringement, trademark infringement, and misappropriation of Lipa's likeness and image.
The lawsuit also accused Samsung of intentionally benefiting from Lipa's global fame and carefully built public image. Her attorneys argued that the company attempted to use her celebrity status to attract buyers and increase product sales without compensating her.

"Samsung's infringing conduct — using Ms. Lipa's assets for zero consideration — makes a mockery of her hard work in establishing a successful brand," the complaint stated.

The filing additionally referenced several social media posts from fans who appeared to associate the singer directly with the televisions.

Singer's Legal Team Says Samsung Ignored Repeated Warnings
According to the lawsuit, Lipa first became aware of the alleged unauthorized use around June 2025 after images of the television packaging began circulating online.
Her representatives subsequently sent cease-and-desist demands to Samsung, claiming the company had violated her publicity and intellectual property rights.

However, the complaint alleged that Samsung continued using the image despite receiving repeated warnings. The filing described the company's alleged response as "dismissive and callous," while also claiming that the products remained on sale across the United States.

Neither Samsung nor representatives for Lipa publicly responded to requests for comment following news of the filing. Lipa now finds herself at the center of a legal fight that could place celebrity image rights and corporate marketing practices under renewed scrutiny.
