Television's most decorated detective is trading her badge for a microphone. Mariska Hargitay has landed one of entertainment's biggest hosting gigs, and the timing couldn't be more fitting.

Mariska Hargitay has a lot to celebrate these days. The "Law and Order: SVU" star has been tapped to host the 78th Annual Emmy Awards, which will air live on NBC on September 14.

With this appointment, Hargitay becomes the first woman to lead the ceremony in 15 years, taking over from Jane Lynch. Her selection carries even more historical weight than that gap suggests.

Hargitay is only the fourth woman to host the Emmys in this century, joining a short list that includes Ellen DeGeneres, who took the reins in 2001 and again in 2005, Heidi Klum, who shared hosting duties alongside several other emcees, and Lynch herself.

The actress expressed her excitement over the honor in a statement, framing it as an extension of the work that has defined her career. "Bringing important stories into the light has been the heartbeat of my career," she began.

"It's my great honor to host the 78th Emmy Awards — in the 100th birthday year of my beloved NBC — and celebrate this extraordinary community of storytellers."

She went on to reflect on the collaborative spirit that television production represents to her. "Whether it's an actor or a director, a costumer or a sound designer, we are all so privileged to take part in creating television that unites us," she continued.

"Regardless of how, where or when we watch, we are together in our laughter, our tears, our love of stories — and our delighted anticipation to see what happens next."

This isn't Hargitay's first brush with Emmy gold. The actress and filmmaker won the award in 2006 for her portrayal of Olivia Benson on "SVU" and has since racked up eight additional nominations for the role.

Beyond her performance work, she also earned a News and Documentary Emmy in 2019 from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for producing "I Am Evidence."

Her latest project, the 2025 HBO documentary "My Mom Jayne," is in the running for this year's ceremony as well.

NBC and Peacock executive Jen Neal praised Hargitay's impact on the industry, calling her contribution to television nearly unmatched.

"Mariska has earned her place among television's icons," Neal said. "Few performers have left the kind of mark on television that Mariska has."

She continued, highlighting the actress's decades-long commitment to her signature role, tying it into NBC's milestone anniversary. "For 27 seasons, she has brought strength, compassion and humanity to one of the most beloved characters on TV," Neal added.

"As NBC celebrates 100 years of unforgettable storytelling, we can't think of anyone more fitting to help celebrate the incredible legacy of television."

Hargitay is now heading into her 28th season fronting "SVU," which remains the longest-running primetime drama in American television history.

Her hosting gig also breaks a long-standing pattern: she'll be the first Emmys host in nearly two decades who isn't primarily known for comedic work.

The last time a non-comedic personality took charge of the ceremony was back in 2008, when five reality-TV hosts, Tom Bergeron, Klum, Howie Mandel, Jeff Probst, and Ryan Seacrest, split emcee duties among themselves.

Television Academy chair Cris Abrego echoed the sentiment shared by NBC's team, emphasizing Hargitay's broad appeal.

"Mariska is one of television's most beloved stars, whose talent, authenticity and extraordinary connection with audiences have made her an enduring force in our industry and in culture," Abrego said.

He closed with confidence that Hargitay's hosting debut would deliver a night to remember. "We're so delighted to have her join us as the host of this year's Emmys telecast and know that she will create an unforgettable evening honoring the very best of television."
