The 80-year-old singer says the show digs into the real story behind the rhinestones, not just the glitz fans are used to seeing. It marks her first major stage news since health struggles forced her to cancel a Las Vegas residency.

Dolly Parton has made a surprise career announcement — much to the delight of the country star's fans. The "Jolene" hitmaker took to Instagram to share that she's returning to the stage with a new Broadway show.

"Well, hey! It's Dolly. And I have some big news that I am so excited to share," Parton began in a video shared on Tuesday, July 7. "I can officially announce that 'Dolly: A True Original Musical' is coming to Broadway! And you're invited."

"Just like the title says, I mean true in every sense of the word. Now, this isn't about a story about sparkle and shine on the outside," she continued. "It's about where I really come from, what I've lived, what I've lost, what I've loved and how I've found my way."

Parton, 80, revealed that the musical will be told in her "own words and through the music that's been part of [her] every step of the journey."

Although she won't be performing in the production herself, the "9 to 5" songstress hinted that she's penning brand-new songs for the show, alongside performances of several fan-favorite tracks.

"This really is a dream come true," she added. "I can't wait to share it with all of you."

The highly anticipated production, helmed by Tony Award-winning director Bartlett Sher, kicks off in New York City with previews this December at St. James Theatre. It officially opens on January 19, 2027 — what will be Parton's 81st birthday.

Pre-sale tickets became available starting Wednesday, July 8. According to the musical's official website, the show will spotlight Parton's greatest hits, including "Jolene," "I Will Always Love You," "9 to 5" and "Coat of Many Colors."

The production first debuted in Nashville last year and has since gone through several revisions ahead of its Broadway debut.

The announcement arrives not long after Parton was forced to cancel her "Dolly: Live in Las Vegas" residency due to ongoing health issues. She had already postponed the six scheduled shows once before, last year.

"I have some good news and a little bad news," she shared in a social media video back in May. "The good news is I'm responding really well to meds and treatments and I'm improving every day."

"Now the bad news is it's going to take a little while before I'm up to stage performance level because some of the meds and treatments make me a little bit swimmy-headed, as my grandmother used to say," she joked.

"I am truly sorry that I'm going to miss all of you that had tickets to see me in Las Vegas. Well, you get on to Vegas, and you have a big time… And I'll see you somewhere down the line," she added.

Parton went on, "I'm doing really well, and they assure me that everything I have is treatable, so I'm going with that, and I just want you to know I thank you for standing by me and that I will always love you."

The beloved singer first went public with her health struggles in September 2025, when she withdrew from an appearance at Dollyworld due to kidney stones.

That same year, in March, her husband, Carl Dean, passed away at age 82. Following his death, Parton stepped away from music briefly to grieve her partner of nearly 60 years.
