Ariana Grande’s Weight Loss in ‘Petal’ Music Video Sparks Concern

The pop star debuted a string of retro-glam looks in the noir-tinged visual, but viewers fixated on her arms and frame rather than the story's shocking finale.

Ariana Grande has released the music video for "Petal," the title track off her album of the same name — and her appearance in the visuals has drawn a starkly divided response online.

The singer has noticeably lost weight, and the change has stirred concern among fans. In the clip, which dropped Friday, July 31, Grande plays a woman auditioning before a panel of men in an office setting, decked out in a 1950s-inspired ensemble.

The outfit features a fitted, sleeveless yellow top with a scooped neckline, paired with a full white midi skirt cinched at the waist. She rounds out the look with sheer white lace gloves, a small white handbag, and matching pale-yellow pumps, her hair swept into a voluminous, old-Hollywood ponytail.

Elsewhere in the video, she dances in a waiting room alongside other hopeful actresses, all clutching scripts and dressed in similarly retro fashion.

After getting turned down, her character returns for another shot — this time in a bolder outfit. Grande switches into an all-black look: a short-sleeved, chest-baring top paired with black ankle-length trousers.

She finishes the ensemble with pointed black heels, a black leather jacket, and dark sunglasses pushed up into her hair. The pattern repeats throughout the video until, near the end, her character finally snaps and turns violently on the panel of judges.

Despite the video's clear undertones and symbolism, many fans couldn't look past the "Thank You, Next" singer's noticeably thin physique. "I never knew it was this bad. Her arms while she's shifting seats in the chairs is absolutely alarming," one person wrote.

"The amount of professional people that this video had to go through and STILL it got posted," another said. "This is beyond horrifying. I dont want a single girl to think this is normal or aspirational [sic]," a third added.

Others rushed to defend the "Wicked" star, pushing back against the body-shaming.

"This is unnecessary. Leave Ariana's body alone," one viewer wrote. "Yall are freaks. Stop commenting on her body," another urged. A third pointed out, "We do not know what someone is going through ❤️."

Grande has previously spoken out about the constant commentary on her appearance. Back in 2024, the singer grew emotional when a reporter asked how she copes with the "overwhelming" pressure women face "to always look perfect."

"I think that it's something that is uncomfortable no matter what scale you're experiencing it on," she said at the time, adding that remarks about someone's weight can feel "uncomfortable" and "horrible."

"Even if you go to Thanksgiving dinner, and someone's granny says, 'Oh my God, you look skinnier! What happened?' or 'You look heavier! What happened?'" she continued.

Amid the renewed scrutiny following the "Petal" video's release, a spokesperson for Grande has revealed she plans to step back from the public eye once her Eternal Sunshine tour wraps on September 1.
